A golden field of buttercups

field of buttercups

The beautiful flowers in today’s blog post are buttercups. Buttercups have a special meaning for me. When I was a child my family and I went to the Catskill Mountains every summer. We stayed in a small bungalow and spent our days and nights socializing with other families who were part of the same bungalow colony. Most of the dads stayed behind to work during the week and joined their families on the weekends.

I was an unhappy child in a dysfunctional family and life was much more difficult during those summer months because my dad wasn’t there to protect and comfort me.

But there were buttercups, everywhere I looked I saw a field of gold.

I took solace in the beauty of the buttercups that filled the landscape as far as I could see. I would lay on the grass for hours inhaling the sweet smell of those lustrous yellow flowers. The petals were like silk and the smell was strong and sweet. In later years I read that buttercups don’t have a smell, but you couldn’t convince me of that during those turbulent childhood summers.

I’ve always found peace and comfort in the miracle of flowers. They push through the dirt, turn towards the light and grow, even on cloudy days. If we could only see that miracle clearly I think our entire lives would change.

So the next time you walk in nature stop and smell the roses, or the buttercups, or whatever surprise nature brings. And if you focus your mind on the magic of nature you’ll see miracles everywhere you look.

Flowers grow back even after they’ve been stepped on. That’s part of the miracle of life we can all tune in to.

Buttercups are beautiful. Here in Tennessee, they are some of the first flowers to emerge and greet us in early spring, around late February or early March.
