How to be happy: 6 habits to add to your daily routine
Habits matter. If you’ve ever tried breaking a bad habit you know how deeply engrained they can be. Fortunately good habits are also engrained and making positive habits part of your daily routine can help.
Happiness is not the same for everyone. For some its the freedom to pursue their dreams, for others being at peace with who they are is their happiness goal. Regardless of your version of happiness, living a happier life is within reach and making some changes to your regular habits can help you get there.
Here are some habits to get you started. Just remember that everyone’s version of happiness is a little different and some of these habits may not work for you.
1. Get into nature
Try spending 30 minutes or more a week outdoors appreciating the beauty of nature. For an extra benefit add some exercise to the mix. Your nature walk can be anywhere from a neighborhood park to a rooftop garden — wherever you can experience nature and fresh air.
We smile when we’re happy, but it’s actually a 2-way street because when we smile our brain makes dopamine, which makes us happier. I always smile at people passing me in the street, and many of them smile back. That’s a moment of happiness.
3. Create a gratitude list
Control your thoughts. At the beginning of each week make a list of happy memories and things you’re grateful for. When you’re standing in line at the grocery store or have a few minutes to spare break out the list. You can even use it when you’re just generally feeling down and need to change your thoughts.
4. Re-evaluate your goals
Goals can change and there’s no shame in changing your game as well if your original plan no longer serves you. Let go of any goals that don’t work for you and focus on those that do.
5. Get enough rest
I don’t always get enough rest and that’s something I’m working on. I can definitely feel the difference in my mood when I’m sleep-deprived. If you feel the need to take a nap during the day, take it. It’s your body’s way of telling you to slow down. Getting enough sleep is vital for your health and brain function and it lowers anxiety.
6. Manage stress
Some easy habits you might want to try include listening to music, writing down your thoughts and feelings, meditating, walking in nature and practicing yoga.
