Live like a free spirit

Is image how you see me or is it how I see me? Or is image the way we’re reflected to others? I’ve never been sure which mattered more. I mean, I know that my opinion should be the only one that counts but I don’t think I ever really felt that in my gut. So here I am at 74 with my short ‘older lady’ hairstyle and my trusty backpack — because after all, backpacks are the best for older people, right — and I hate, sorry, strongly dislike how I look. I’m melting into the background of mediocrity. Those who know me know that just doesn’t cut it.

A few weeks ago I was walking down the street blending into the background of Manhattan and I saw dozens of me’s walking by. We all blended in. We could have been related! I silently screamed “STOP THE MADNESS” (thanks Keven O’Leary) and came home determined to move out of status-quo town.

Dealing with unexpected health issues can really throw a foul ball into your perfect life. That’s where reinvention becomes so important, because we can be whoever we decide we want to be under any and all circumstances. That is the hidden power within each of us and we can use that power to change our outward appearance and focus on spiritual and physical healing as well. For me, moving out of status-quo town meant changing what I didn’t like about myself by focusing on what I do like and how I really see myself physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I’ve always been unconventional, always lived outside the box and have lost family and friends as a result. But that didn’t stop me and it never will because my spiritual strength keeps bringing me back to myself. And going it alone on my terms is far better than compromising my truth to fit into someone else’s box.

I love my unconventional ways, and in the final analysis that’s all that really matters.

Laura, What a wonderful philosophy to live by! I am going to start living my life according to the advice you’re putting out there for all of us. Like your photo of the kitty cat looking in the mirror and seeing a ferocious lion looking back, I will look in the mirror and see a young vibrant lady. Thank you, Laura Grace!

Knowing that we have the power to change the way we see ourselves and the way the world sees us is a dynamic power. I didn’t understand that I had that power until recently, and I’m happy to share that we all have it.
