The importance of being grateful
Practicing gratitude requires little time and energy and can be done almost anywhere. When you start to reap the benefits of gratitude you’ll realize it’s a tool that can help you get the most out of life. You’ll appreciate the importance of the moment and the everyday pleasures you’ve overlooked or taken for granted.
Being grateful can benefit you emotionally, mentally, and even physically. Feeling gratitude can help you manage stress. It’s a healthy way to combat the effects of stress and might even prevent them altogether.
Gratitude helps you experience the world through a positive lens. Because you see everything as a gift the glass becomes half full instead of half empty and you focus on the positive rather than the negative. Your attitude becomes hopeful and optimistic.
It makes sense then that feeling gratitude and having positive thoughts before falling asleep helps you sleep better. Being grateful can improve your overall health and even enhance your relationships.
Here are some ways to develop an ‘attitude of gratitude’:
- Spend time in nature. Recognize the miracles around you, breathe deeply and smell the flowers.

- Keep a gratitude journal and update it regularly.
- Reflect on the positive experiences from your past and present.
- Recite positive affirmations. You can do this anywhere at any time.
- Hang out with uplifting people who recognize the importance of positive thinking.
